The Tools are Talking!
Have you ever opened a box and looked in on tools that you haven't used for years? I had been considering using some wonderful yellow cedar pieces, to carve out a model for an upcoming sculpture commission bid. It would be quite intricate by way of carving, due to the posturing of the figures that I had in mind.
Then...I came across a wooden box in the dusty reaches of my studio. I knew what it contained the minute it caught my eye, but had not considered using clay...till just then! Inside the box was every tool that I needed to model the work I was designing. It made it possible to complete the modeling task on time for submission. Otherwise the carving would have taken a month to complete.
The beauty of course is that clay lends itself to immediate shaping. That chip on the floor, can now be re-attached as it were, and I carry on. It was a great experience to once again after too many years, to feel the cool and responsive clay find it's place on the growing sculpture.
This clay sculpture has been modeled as an entry for a commission bid. See more photos and another artwork for consideration as a second piece for spring 2009 placement.
